IRS complaints filed against Mark Zuckerberg

The Center for Renewing America (CRA) filed two formal complaints with the IRS on September 22, 2022 alleging malfeasance related to activities surrounding the 2020 election. The first complaint is against META CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. The second complaint is against three voting rights groups - Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL), Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR), and National Vote at Home Institute (NVAHI).

Russ Vought, a former Office of Management and Budget Director, is the President of the Center for Renewing America, a conservative policy group. The complaints which were obtained and reported on by FOX Business allege that Zuckerberg and the three groups engaged in a scheme to inject nearly $500 million into the 2020 election in order to "throw it" to President Biden.

The article reports that according to the CRA, Zuckerberg hired former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe to lead the effort. Plouffe allegedly funneled most of the hundred-million-dollar grants from Zuckerberg and his wife to Democratic-leaning jurisdictions in swing states via the three tax-exempt voting rights groups before the November 2020 election. The CRA added that it is "rubbish" to suggest that Zuckerberg and Chan hired Plouffe to help local governments on a non-partisan basis.

In a statement shared with FOX Business the CRA said, "It is beyond disgraceful to imagine federal taxpayers subsidizing the partisan preferences of billionaires who easily could have given to a Democrat super PAC in 2020."

The statement continued, "But, of course, then they would not have been able to take a tax deduction, so they disguised the political nature of their donations and shuffled them through 'charitable' intermediaries, making ordinary Americans foot the bill."  The CRA stated it is illegal for an individual to make donations intended to illegitimately aid one party over another.

The complaints call for the IRS to deny any personal income tax exemptions collected by Zuckerberg and Chan for their donations to the CTCL, CEIR, and NVAHI during the 2020 election cycle. The CRA also asked the IRS to terminate the tax exemptions of the three groups.

In an effort to examine the other side of the coin, curiously no other source of news could be found on Google nor any press release from any of the mentioned organizations’ websites. However, from the FOX Business article a statement was made by Brian Baker, a spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. He referred to a 6-0 ruling from the Federal Election Commission in August which stated the connection between the couple's 2020 donations and any purpose to influence the election is "speculative at best."

Baker told FOX Business, "As the recent unanimous, bipartisan 6-0 decision from the Federal Election Commission has confirmed, the donations to two 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations (the Center for Tech and Civic Life and the Center for Election and Innovation Research) to help support voting in 2020 during the unprecedented conditions of the pandemic were apolitical, non-partisan and intended only to ensure that all Americans could vote safely, regardless of party affiliation or candidate preference,".

Baker added, "While we have neither received nor reviewed the complaint, we are confident that any IRS review of the facts will confirm this. Moreover, reporting on the complaint by the Center for Renewing America suggests it is based on obvious factual inaccuracies and repeats several disproven and preposterous claims."

The CTCL, CEIR and NVAHI did not respond to FOX Business’ requests for comment.

  1. If this is proven to be true then..wow. Not only is this an attempt to create an unfair election but to make American's pay the cost of their wrong-doings? This is news I will want to keep up with as this can easily affect myself and countless other people. The fact that there are no counter-reports made is suspicious as well. I wonder if that is an attempt to not encourage the fake drama to grow or delay as they try to figure a way out.
